Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service brings people of all ages and backgrounds together, strengthening both communities and building a stronger connection with our neighbors.

Volunteers from all across the country come together to honor Dr. King’s legacy through a variety of projects both in-person and virtually.

IN-PERSON PROJECT OPTIONS

What can you do for others to celebrate MLK Day of Service? 


Volunteer at the Rise Food Pantry or Office

  • Send a care package to someone. 
  • Donate food to the Rise Pantry or clothing to the  Thrift Store.
  • Bake cookies or write a letter to someone who may be isolated during this time. 
  • Clean the house of someone who is sick. 
  • Pick up litter in your neighborhood or at your local park. 
  • Write encouraging messages on the sidewalk. 
  • In the drive-thru, buy the person behind you their order.
  • Drop off handmade cards and treats for hospital workers.
  • Travel to a neighborhood that’s not your own & leave $5-$10 VISA gift cards with random strangers.
  • Make “you are loved” post-its to randomly place around town.
  • Perform an act of random kindness.

If there are children in your household, encourage them to participate with you. Through volunteering, children learn to respect others, be helpful and kind, understand the needs of others, understand people who are different than themselves, gain a better understanding of good citizenship. Share your acts of service or kindness by tagging  NJRISE Facebook page and using hashtag #njrise

  • Create ‘How to Videos’  or  Read a book  for children or seniors on uRise
  • Call someone who may be isolated during this time. 
  • Advocate on Social Media, tag #njrise.
  • Start a Book Club and meet online.
  • Volunteer to transcribe historical documents through the Smithsonian Digital Volunteer program.
  • Use Catchafire to access flexible, virtual volunteer opportunities that exercise your skill sets and support causes you hold dear.
  • Become a National Park Services web volunteer! NPS is on the lookout for people to test and evaluate web products to enhance and improve their online offerings.
